AIA Baltimore Design Awards 2024

Updated: Oct 6

Ziger|Snead Architects has been recognized with multiple honors at the 2024 AIA Baltimore Excellence in Design Awards, celebrating two recent residential projects that combine thoughtful planning, strong site relationships, and crafted detail.

Potomac House in Potomac, Maryland

Potomac House received both the Residential Design Honor Award and an Excellence in Design Award. Located in Potomac, Maryland, the 5,400-square-foot home is designed for a young family on a steep, wooded site. A thick concrete wall runs along the slope and anchors the house to the land, while the upper level, clad in charred Shou Sugi Ban siding, appears to float above it. Large glass walls open the home to the surrounding forest, and a mirrored glass light monitor brings natural light into the stair hall while glowing like a lantern at night.

Five Gables, a new 8,500-square-foot home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was also honored with two awards for both Design and Detail. Set on the edge of the Conestoga River and Lancaster Country Club, the house is organized as a series of five gabled volumes, each tailored to a part of family life, from public gathering spaces to a kids’ wing and sports zone. These gables are staggered across the site and unified by a flat-roofed connector with skylights and nickel gap ceiling panels. The home’s louvered rear façade provides sun shading during the day and glows softly at night.

Both homes were celebrated for their sensitivity to site, clarity of form, and expressive use of materials.
