Steve Ziger Elevated to the AIA College of Fellows

AIA Fellowship Recognizes Significant Contributions to Profession of Architecture and Society

Baltimore, MD (February 23, 2018) – Steve Ziger, FAIA, co-founder with Jamie Snead, AIA of Baltimore-based Ziger/Snead Architects, was one of only 152 American Institute of Architects (AIA) members and the only architect from Baltimore to be elevated to its prestigious College of Fellows this year. Ziger was elevated for promoting the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession through design of the highest standard.

Steve Ziger’s work advances civic architecture through a refined design that is rooted in place, inspires optimism, and enhances community engagement. Steve's mission that great design can have a positive impact on quality of life has been realized in many transformative projects for non-profits and institutions in the City of Baltimore and recognized with more than 100 local, national, and international awards for design excellence.

Rooted in a deep understanding of Baltimore’s ethos, history, promise, and challenges, Steve’s work is a search for authenticity and celebration of place. Notable projects include:

  • The Brown Center at Maryland Institute College of Art, on which Steve collaborated with his mentor, Charles Brickbauer. The new structure stimulates a dialogue between contemporary and traditional forms, technologies and materials.
  • The AIA National Award Winning flagship campus for the Living Classrooms Foundation which includes the historic restoration of the oldest standing industrial warehouse on Baltimore’s waterfront with a contemporary addition.
  • The Gallery Addition for the Maryland Historical Society. The zinc- and glass-paneled entry and gallery building addition conveys a progressive image for the institution while complementing the scale, proportions, and materials of the surrounding historic buildings.
  • The LEED Platinum Center for Parks & People in the city’s historic Druid Hill Park. The new campus engages residents and provides a much-needed center of community activity.
  • The Baltimore Design School, a transformation from blight to a state-of-the-art facility within the confines of a minimal budget, recognized with a National Historic Trust Driehaus Preservation Award and National AIA Award for Design Excellence.

Out of a total AIA membership of over 90,000, fewer than four percent of members are distinguished with the honor of fellowship and honorary fellowship. Ziger and the other 151 Fellows elevated in 2018 will be honored at an investiture ceremony at the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 in New York City this June.
