CARMA Carbon Map

CARMA_Image 01

Carbon Monitoring for Action (CARMA) is a new database that contains information on the carbon emissions of over 50,000 power plants and 4,000 power companies globally. Their revamped website includes a handy tool for finding local power companies and listing the power production plants that contribute to their energy mix. The site also organizes the data into a handy google map for ease of comprehension.

Their objective statement says a lot about their belief in what they are doing and I might add fall into line with my beliefs. In their words:

"The objective of CARMA.org is to equip individuals with the information they need to forge a cleaner, low-carbon future. By providing complete information for both clean and dirty power producers, CARMA hopes to influence the opinions and decisions of consumers, investors, shareholders, managers, workers, activists, and policymakers. CARMA builds on experience with public information disclosure techniques that have proven successful in reducing traditional pollutants."

Information is king! I really believe that given correct and relevant information, people do make better decisions. Even if everyone doesn't, it may sway the market enough so that not everyone has to make a conscious decision. Sooner or later all the choices will be healthy and efficient.
