Merriweather Post Pavilion was designed by architect Frank Gehry as the premier performance venue in the heart of the new town of Columbia, Maryland. Early in his career, he developed a design that gently engages the natural topography of the wooded site. When the pavilion opened in 1967, its acoustics were considered by many in the industry to be the best among outdoor venues. Although the facility continues to attract top-tier performers and is a strong regional asset with a capacity of up to 19,000, the pavilion facilities require significant upgrades in response to increased regional competition. In 2004, prior to determining whether to purchase the venue from its original developer, Howard County engaged Ziger/Snead and Webb Management Services to evaluate its options. The evaluation entailed a detailed analysis of the existing facility and site, future adjacent development, regional competition, past and projected programming and revenues, potential construction phasing, and relative costs. The team presented several scenarios ranging from minimal upgrades to full replacement with either a new open-air pavilion or various types of year-round venues.
